This karangan was written by Syazana who has graciously agreed to share with all.
The context of the karangan question is fixed and confined. It is meant to help student to stay focus and not stray out of point. This is a typical N level descriptive question. For O level, the descriptive question is more open, and candidates are expected to show maturity in choosing context appropriate to the question; so an added cognitive load there. Still, they can expect a N level typed descriptive question for O level too as they need to demonstrate competency in writing both open or fixed and confined context typed descriptive question.
Syazana has demostrated in this excellent piece that foregrounding a theme in fixed and confined descriptive question is possible. In doing so, Syazana has enhanced her writing piece by several notches. That is why we place so much importance in theme in our descriptive writing strategy.

In this video, two students shared how we taught descriptive writing using flipped classroom approach, and how they have benefited from it. We have submitted a proposal to the Academy of Singapore Teachers (AST) to share our teaching strategy with fellow teachers. We are hopeful to be given an opportunity to share at AST again next year.
